Mounting

  1. Find a spot.

Windshield or dashboard, 40–70 cm from your face, with the front camera facing you. It must not block your view of the road.

  2. Run the alignment.

Open Road Companion and follow the 10-second alignment. It checks the distance and that it can see your eyes.

  3. Set off, and leave it on screen.

Set everything up before you drive. On long drives, keep the iPhone on a charger.

The app must stay on screen

On iPhone, Road Companion can only watch while it is on screen. If you switch to another app or the app goes to the background, iOS stops the camera, tracking stops and a notification tells you so. Open Road Companion again to continue.

Questions

Where should I mount my iPhone?

On the windshield or dashboard, 40–70 cm from your face, with the front camera facing you and without blocking your view of the road. Then run the 10-second alignment.

Why does tracking stop when I open another app?

On iPhone the app must stay on screen. If it goes to the background, iOS stops the camera, tracking stops and a notification tells you so. Open Road Companion again to continue.

Does it work at night?

Yes. On iPhones with Face ID, the TrueDepth camera uses infrared light, so it can see your eyelids in the dark.

Does it work with sunglasses?

When the app cannot see your eyes, it switches to sunglasses mode and watches your head tilt instead.

What happens during a phone call?

During a call, warnings come by vibration only.

What does the rest-area button do?

At the break-suggestion stage, the button opens Google Maps with a search for rest areas. The app itself does not use your location.

Does the app need the internet?

No. It works in airplane mode and sends nothing to any server.

How do I get a refund?

Purchases are handled by Apple. You can request a refund at reportaproblem.apple.com.

The app did not warn me. Why?

The app can miss signs, for example when the phone is badly placed, the app is in the background or your face is covered. It is an assistive tool and no substitute for rest. If you feel tired, stop and rest.
